Stoner hoping for australian cold front
11.20 GMT: Strong low pressure on the west coast and northern Pacific is likely to give some of the southern US snowfall this weekend, but the front will be much stronger than expected this weekend, with heavy snow and wind on Sunday into Monday and the week, forecasters say.
11.15 GMT: Low pressure is forecast for southern and central North America on Sunday ahead of the weekend’s snowfall. Forecasters are particularly looking for low pressure over southern Canada and in the southern states of Texas and Oklahoma that could create a strong front on Monday night to give enough snow for the heaviest amounts, says forecaster John Nielsen-Gammon of National Weather Service in Oklahoma City.
“We expect the front to break off through Saturday and move northward into Canada and parts of the lower 48 states and will build to a point west of that and continue westward through the week,” Nielsen-Gammon says.
As in 2015, forecasters have low-to-mid pressure in place for this weekend and could see a major area of snowfall on Tuesday. But that forecast will depend on the formation of the front and the snow on Monday, Nielsen-Gammon says.
The last major winter event during which that occurred was the 2007/2008 mild winter season, which saw the Sierras, Rockies and the Rocky Mountains get an early start to the year. This year’s event is the first since 2008.

In Europe, more rain is likely, with snow falling over northern Ireland and the southeast, although that snow could easily melt.
High pressure is pushing warm, moist air over northern Europe. This means there should be more snow on Monday and possibly in places on Tuesday, forecasters say.
